I've found silver coins that I concluded were in a fire or exposed to heat do that.

Thats a penny or was, the zinc is corroding. They do that when they are in water and sometimes if they are in a fire. The zinc ones just do not last in the ground.

Its a weird coin for sure. Drop it on a table it sounds lead. But I'm sure ur right about the fire.

Oh and copper cents exposed to fertilizer and or salts can do that too.

I've tumbmed a few that boilded up like that and it never could expose the dates. Here's a few ratty wheats that I've kept:
