Hard to tell from the pics but my guess might be a cocking hammer to a flintlock type firearm?

I don't know if there was any farming in that area but that sure resembles a piece that goes in the bottom of a John deere planter bottom. It was used to knock the seed out of the seed plates. I used to farm and have replaced a lot of them.

Hey Tensas,

Thanks for the info. I dug this up from under tree roots 20 ft from a couple of dozen buttons finds that are in the late 1700 and early 1800's. This was probably 8 inches down. Anything is possible. I was just hoping it was from the older era along with the buttons. Who knows?

I think most hammers would be brass and this is iron...

Looks like a smaller version of this lions leg furniture foot.
This one is made of brass.
