I have had this slab of what I think is petrified wood for years. Not really sure now where I got it. Interesting writing on one side. "Luray. Oct. 29 1887 XXX " I cant quite make out the last three letters on the bottom.

What do I have here ?

I think this is a slice of speleothem, a stalagmite or stalactite, from Luray Cavern, Luray, Virginia. The cavern has been a tourist attraction since 1878.

Harry, I think you hit the nail on the head.

Petrified wood looks much different, and the gift shop at Luray used to sell pieces like this. The grain pattern is also different than that of wood.
