Today, I decided to walk a local creek with my wife and dog. It has been raining and I have been finding arrowheads and other Indian relics. Because I was looking for arrowheads, I did not take my metal detector, so I was very surprised at my lucky find. While in the water up to my knees and looking along the banks, I saw a piece of something rusty protruding from the wall of the creek bank. It was about two feet from the surface and the only reason that it was showing, was because the water had washed away the clay and mud. The first words out of my mouth were, "Hey! I wonder if that's a wagon wheel hub." Sure enough... after pulling it out.... I am 99% certain that it is in fact a wagon wheel hub! I searched for photos of hubs on the net and will post one of them, along with photos of what I found. I am starting to clean it off but have stopped because I am afraid that I may ruin it. I have read that if I soak it in vinigar, that will retard the rust. If anyone knows of a better way.....I would love the advice. Anyway.... here ar the photos of the location and the find.
P.S. Knowing that wagons carried boxes of things, and thinking that the owner lost the wheel while crossing the creek..... you can rest assured that I will be out there again in a few days to metal detect the whole site. Just thinking of what may lie hidded is driving me nuts!
