It's very old, likely 17th or 18thc... my first thought was a leather strap end.
but now I'm thinking a closure latch form a leather bound book cover.

House dates 1753 and still standing. Book cover latch is possible. Thanks

Went back and found another piece about 30’ away from the first. The biggest one seems to ha a 3 dimensional design and the smaller one is just flat and blank on one side.
