Hello again sports fans and welcome to the... oh wait.. that's a different forum altogether! <blushing> Hi Y'all ! Er.. <ahem> Good evening fellow metal detectoristsesss. <chuckle> I had a wonderful day today. Except for not waking up with my lovely wife and enjoying her company this morning, I don't think I would change a thing. I slept in (means getting up anytime after 5:30 AM) and after a leisurely breakfast of toast and cereal I loaded up the cooler, the detectors and my shopping bag. Making a pit stop at the Farmers' market as the vendors were just getting into full swing, I made my produce selections and purchases for the week, then headed off to one of my favorite hunting grounds. Unfortunately there was no "Free Friday Flicks" (free movies) last night.. so there were no new pocket dumps and goodies to be had on the movie hill. I *DID* find change though, and plenty of pull tabs. I went on to other spots in the park to continue my searching. One spot was on the other side of the hill, a grove of pine trees, where the boy scouts like to set up camp during the Jamboree. Odd that I found so many buried beer cans there. <one eyebrow raised questioningly> along with some loose change and.. of course, more pull tabs.
Did I mention it was a GORGEOUS DAY??
Speaking of pine trees, here's what the one in my front yard looks like after the lightning strike the other night.. not much damage, but I'm afraid the tree is going to die all the same. *sigh*
After sweeping the Boy Scout forest <grin> I moved on to another spot in the park, around some of the many shelters. In and around the big trees, around the shelters, and especially on and around the volleyball pitches. It was on one of these that I hit the motherload of tokens. I initially thought it was a quarter, as that was what came up on my detector. I dug, and it was right were it was indicated, just a token. Oh well, then before standing back up I ran the bullseye over the hole again.. another one? Yep.. and another, and another, and another.. till I had Seven tokens out of the same hole! Either that was some pocket dump or someone put those suckers..er.. tokens there deliberately. Oh well. I was excited, and it was fun, can't have everything.
Here they are after I cleaned them up a bit. Looks like the two larger ones are for a sports gear company, and the five smaller ones (quarter sized) are for a local venue.
Moving on to yet another spot I began pushing my luck.. it was getting on towards lunch time on a GORGEOUS Saturday afternoon.. of course the park would be filling up with people.. and kiddies. As is usual when kiddies abound, the guy with the metal detector looks like the Pied Piper and they are trailing you all over the place.. "Hey Mister!. What are you looking for? Hey! Found anything good?, Can you find anything good with that thing? " *sigh* How to bite your tongue and not be rude to youngsters. I've found that if I can't completely ignore them (thanks to my headphones) I play a little game with them. I palm a pull tab, and when I find a target and dig it up, I swap the coin for the pull tab.. all those eager little curious Georges crowd in to see what I've dug up, only to see ANOTHER pull tab. <Laughing quietly on the inside> Eventually after four or five of these they lose interest and wander off. Except for today. As luck would have it I had an encounter with either a good hearted little guy or a prankster.. I'll give him the benefit of the doubt. When my back was turned I heard this little joker ask his buddies if anyone had a penny. They didn't know I could hear them and as they ante'd up the penny the would be good samaritan tried to casually get out in front of me to Salt my path with his penny.. surreptitiously dropping his penny where he thought I was headed. You decide.. prankster or good hearted samaritan.. after all, ALL I WAS FINDING WERE PULL TABS.. or so he thought.
I just HAD to mess with him though. As I got to within a sweep or two of where he'd dropped the penny, I would abruptly change directions. I could see the look of disbelief on his face out of the corner of my eye. I pretended to be concentrating on my headphones and detector to keep a straight face, as he scrambled in the grass where he dropped the penny and tried again to casually get in front of my path. Drop.. and again.. just before getting to his suprise I changed directions. "Awww Mannnn!" I could hear him say. And again he scrambled on his hands and knees ripping up the grass looking for his penny. Once more into the breech! Johnny Appleseed tried yet again to casually get out in front of me.. this time he got creative.. he tossed his tennis ball and pretended to retrieve it... and dropped the penny. Smoooth! <chuckle> By now I'm biting my tongue, with tears in my eyes to keep from laughing out loud. Alas, his unknowing father called him in and the game was over. What a day!
Just before I called it a day I came across another signal for a quarter. I pinpointed it in the usual way. Waving an X over the signal, then using the pinpointer function on my detector to double check. Then I dug a plug (indicated being four inches down) When my plug was out, and my hole empty, there was no coin.
I waved my detector over the hole and got a signal.. same four inches down.. but there was nothing there. DOH! Use the bullseye! I put my probe down in the hole and nothing.. well nothing in the bottom.. but as I went around the walls of the hole I got a signal. The coin was just on the outside of my plug. Now I know I am still relatively new at this game, but I know I zeroed in on that signal as best I could. If I had not had my probe I would probably have just filled the hole back in and missed the coin. I've found coins in other peoples "holes" who have apparently done that very thing. Thank You Bullseye! <smile> Never leave a hole without it!
Thought I had found gold at one point. Was all puffed up and ready to break into the chicken dance and everything.. right there in front of tall those kids! *sigh* turned out to be a bit of elastic band wrapped in gold colored foil or ribbon braid ?? SPOOF!
Oh, another find that the kiddies didn't get to see. I got a "Hummer" in the park! <rolling on the floor laughing> all right get your minds out of the gutter for a minute.
Here's my booty for the day, clad, toys, spoofs, and of course.. pull tabs.
That lever looking thing is just that. A gear change lever off of a bicycle I'm guessing.
Now.. time to go spend some quality time with my missus. <smile> Happy Hunting All!
