Could be an old sailing mast pin...like a cotter pin....or then again I could be wrong... :)

Do me a favor bud. I know that you said it's 3 3/4 inches long, but can you shrink the pic a bit so that it'll fit in one screen and maybe throw a quarter or something into the picture for a scale? Thanks a million!

Thats what i thought at first glance too, but dont nail sets usually have a checkered grip on them? And why the rings?

Maybe I'm way out in left field here, but....possibly could it be an old fountain pen of some sort? 3.75 inches is a bit short for a pen, but the shape is there. Perhaps it was originally longer? Just a thought.

hmmm... becauseits so corroded...its hard to tell....but my next two guesses are going to be :

Old Tripod leg from ships compass.....German made triangular tripod ??????

I have an idea.. what about an awl? I bet those rings are to hold it in place. It probably had a wooden case

I'm going to say the writing part of a feather pen. The part that gets dipped into the ink. The feather would stick out of the other end.
