I just got the Sunray S-12 today for my Sovereign and I am having a heck of a time trying to pinpoint deep coins. Shallow coins I seem to be right on. I've tried to do the sov. wiggle and back away slowly until the signal stops and dig in the very front of the coil and I've tried to X the target in all metal pinpoint.
I don't know if the target is deeper than the 12-14" that I digging or what. I have a Sunray probe and having not luck finding the target with it. I know with the 10" tornado the pinpointing is tough on deep coins but I usually find them with some digging. But today with the S-12 I give up and covered over about 10 holes as they were getting to large and deep but still showing a coin. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

iv been using the S12 and GT for about 8 months now and really love it.i only hunt the beach but have found many coins@ 15" with it.i pinpoint as you said by moving back from coin and dig at tip of coil where i just hear the signal..i have found with mine the coin will be just left of center about 2"..iv dug holes 20" deep before and always the coin is in the left side of the hole.yours might be that way or even the right side.you just need to find out where.and another thing,in sand if you are digging a good target and it just disappears and its not in the sand you have dug out.take 2 more big scoops as many times it will sink or turn on its side and will not produce a signal until you move it again. good luck, stay with it as you have the best set up out there!

Is pinpointing method that you stated above the same with the stock 10" coil as with the S-12?

yes,but you will pick up deeper with the S12 and your sweep covers much more as it is 12" coil.pinpoint is a bit easier with the stock coil.with both i work back and fourth left to right ,then when you get a signal back up with coil, left to right and just where you loose the sound the target will be at the front tip,or leading edge of the coil.you can do the same with the heal or back of the coil.just remember the entire coil is energized, not just the center like a Mono coil. here is a good pic to help you understand the diff.http://www.docsdetecting.com/coiltek/index.html

With a dd coil you cant go wrong pinpointing by the book. Swing left to right, note where the signal lis loudest. now turn your body 90 degrees and do the same. X marks the spot. Never fails and no mysterious offset figuring
