Keep seeing old posts about Pit 11. Is this in the State F & G area, which closed to fossil hunting end of Sept.? Are there any other public access areas around Braidwood? Sitting and waiting for my MD to arrive is getting to me, want to do something besides riding my recumbent trike. Any help much appreciated!

Hi!
I don't know any 'public access' sites other than the state parks. But, if these fossils interest you, you might want to check out the links below.

There's a Mazon Creek open house this Saturday, hosted in part by ESCONI (earth science club of northern Illinois). We're going to attend because they let you bring in your mazon creek fossils and they'll identify them.

Here's a page with lots of Mazon creek info & links http://www.esconi.org/Mazon_Creek_Final.htm

Hope this helps!

I forgot to answer part of your question!
Yes, pit 11 is the state park. Fossil hunting will open again March 1st.
I wish I had a place to hunt in the fall, too!
Good luck to you!
Kim
