Found this rock on my rock shelter site, it’s different from the crumbling limestone and seems to have a substance on it, any chance it’s pitch for tool manufacturing? Has anyone seen anything similar?

That was a good idea, I didn’t scrape at it but I held a lighter to a corner, didn’t really smell like pine, and it didn’t soften at all, and eventually a little chip shot off from the heat. I don’t know what it is but seems some kind of formation rather than pitch

It looks volcanic to me. I don't suppose it metallic is it? Magnetic?

Quite a ways away from volcanic rock but never impossible, but after it failed the heat test and popped like a normal stone I think I tossed it in the “rock garden” just a spot outside where I toss the rocks i picked up that turn out to be just rocks
