This was found at about 10 inches down in my parents back yard. The house was built in 1870 but the homes on either side are from the mid to late 1700's. It appears to be a buckle of some sort but I am not quite sure. Any ideas out there?

Thanks for the info. I kind of thought that is what it was. Where can I get more info on this? The truly sad part of the whole thing is that I found a complete one of these at the same property several years ago when we were building an addition to the house. We had finished digging the perimeter for the foundation and I was swinging my machine in the trenches about three feet down and one popped out of the side wall of the foundation trench. This one was about 1/3 bigger and complete. It had the claws/hooks on the back, clipped corners but no markings at all. My familys property sits high on a bluff over looking a harbor in SC. The town is celebrating it's 300th year annaversary this year so there is plenty of potential here. Oh yea the buckle.....lol I was new to detecting at the time and not very prudent with my research so I thought that it was just a piece of scrap metal and I set it aside. It was moved around a couple of times as we went vertical on the construction project and I forgot about it. It might be under the house. In a bucket in the basement? In the dumpster? Landfill:( ? I asked my family if they remembered moving or seeing it? NO LUCK!!! Perhaps I'll find it...Perhaps not... I did eyeball a Tombac button sitting face up in the crawspace last weekend while looking for it so there is still plenty to be found(beautiful w/shank still intact) LONG STORY SHORT I lost the darn thing. I now have a scrap bucket where everything sits and nothing NOTHING gets thrown away until I completely check it out. Lesson Learned!

Very nice 1/2 of a clipped corner plate. Yours is the first 9 pronged cast example I have viewed. Thanks for the time frame... If you still have the other nondescript clipped corner plate could you post a pic of the back...Arty

Arty, I am still searching for the other one as mentioned in my last post there. I am sick to my stomach with the thought that it could have been tossed in a trash can during cleanup. I looked very similar to this one but about 1/3 rd larger and totally complete. I am getting ready to post an old post card pic of the house along with 4 cw era buttons. Three cuff size(1 NY Staff and 1 that was silvered) that were found while digging a foundation. Read that post and I'll put a little history to the property. What can you share about those clipped corner plates?
