Is it possibly petrified wood ? if not that I would think a fossil but I do not think it’s an artifact

Sorry, no signs of being an artifact.

Welcome to the forum.

Better luck next time!

It's still a good find. It's definitely a fossil. Thanks for the feedback. Much appreciated. Mike out!

After learning more about Native American artifacts, I now believe it is a fossil which was used as a chipper. Both a tool and a fossil.

Look sharp or is sharp ? if you run your finger over it do you think it would cut you.

When you say chipper, do you mean for taking flakes off arrowheads? Rounded quartz cobbles, antler and bone does a fine job of that and they produce very consistent results.

It's a cool rock, I would have picked it up and checked it out.

Welcome to TNet! That is most definitely an interesting find, my first thought was that it looked like one of my horses hooves except all dried up. Did you find anything else made from a similar material?

I will be heading back to that river soon and will update if I find anything else near it.

I posted this find in another thread. Told it was a concretion. I don't think so. What do you think it is?
