I can't figure out the name before "& Sons" on the backmark. I see the name ends in S, which I can't match up.

The only info I can find says that buttons with that backmark are post civil war. McGuinn and Bazelon's book list the firm but give no dates other than the post cw note.

According to the history page for the Wilmington Police Department, DE, their organized law enforcement began in 1793. They didn't officially refer to it as a Police Department until 1891 so that might help in dating the button.
