This was dug in Fredericksburg, VA. Same property yielded musket balls/mini-ball bullets (other civil war era items). Any idea if this dates back to the same period? Or what it was specifically used for?

Many thanks in advance!

I Fully Agree..
Good Call Tommy.. :icon_thumright:

Possibly a Farriers hammer or some specialized blacksmith detail hammer.

Thank you for all the replies. Best guess, civil war era or not?

Hard to say definitively, without finding another reference somewhere, but in the context of your other finds in the same area, general condition, and that it appears to be the right material, and age, its surely possible.

Does look like a hammer head, but that would be a pretty thin handle at the top.

Maybe a hammer for tent stakes?

Could be some sort of clevis pin. The pin went through some material and was pinned in place with a piece of wood or metal.

I agree because the slot in the item appears too small to accommodate a wood or even a decent metal handle!

pins and whalers from concrete wall forms.
