Foundin NC and I need a little help IDing some possible coin weights. These were found some 1000 miles apart put are almost identical. Mine has 3 smal square marks in it that are space out evenly across the top and his has 3 longer marks grouped together. His was posted in the todays finds fourm here is a link.

Hello,

Just a point of possible interest...5 grams is pretty close to 3 pennyweight. Your item has three marks on it and your friend states it weighs 5 grams so maybe there is something to it. Pennyweight (dwt) scale is used for measuring precious metals among other things. See if you can get a more accurate weight of your items...4.66 grams would be 3 dwt.

Then again, I could be waaaaay off base.

Happy hunting,

Batch

I have a possible solution.....three "drachms" or drams are equal to 5.33 grams. My weight weighed 5.0 grams. Subtract the weight lost from oxidation and it makes sense. A drachm equals 1.77 grams. ZDD, will you weigh your weight? Drachms were used as apothecary scale weights in the US in the 1800s. Hopefully we are close.

Nope its a typing block, if there is no letter on the ends, then its a 'space'. Those grooves line it up in the primting machine.

Thanks Cru, that was my second thought. I shall mark this as solved.
