It sure looks like a blown barrel, nice find.

Looks to me from the pictures it could be a barrel or a pipe. I couldn't tell either way.

Looks like a blown up barrel of a 410 or a 28 gauge?? shotgun or an iron pipe struck by a plow. It looks like maybe it has a square key slot cut in it as though it had a pulley or wheel on it once? Cleaned up might reveal a little more info on what it may be?

I don't know about your barrel/pipe, but all due respect to Stefen, but all contract civil war rifles and muskets I know of had full round barrels. The Brown bess of Revolution vintage had a round barrel too. Most Octagon and half-octogan barrels were usually sporting rifles after the early 1800s. Round barrels had almost the same strength at a much lighter weight for the poor foot soldier.
