Hi all,

I went to a thrift store today to take a look at some of the things they had.

I saw a shelf with silver plated goblets and glasses but noticed one of them looked different from the surrounding ones and stood out.

So I picked up one of the silver plated goblets and it was light and had a gold tarnished tone.

Then I picked up the odd looking goblet that was amongst the plated ones.

It was heavy, and had a more white silver looking tone to it, and when I say heavy, I mean 368 grams.

So I bought it, but to make this fun and exciting, have a guess everyone!

I put a magnet to it and sure enough it didn't attach to the goblet, then when I looked at the bottom of it, I didn't see and hallmarks but saw a rather worn engraved or stamped text that says something and then Indonesia.

Also there seems to be bent or squashed a bit on the bottom

The only part that does attach a magnet is the handle which if this goblet is of high purity silver would make sense as it could break or bend quite easily.IMG_2865.webpIMG_2866.webpIMG_2867.webp

What do you people think, silver or not?

It definitely looks good! Might need a test kit for that one. I believe it says "handmade Indonesia "

I just did some research and it might be pewter.
But an acid test would be good.

You could always do the spit and tinfoil test too. Spit on a piece of tinfoil, press it against the surface of the goblet. If it smells like rotten eggs (silver sulfide) and gets hot under your thumb, it's silver.

Damn what a test.vanzutphen

Nice thrift find

Not knocking it...
But to me... I would not guess silver...
To me this LOOKS LIKE high end pewter.
Or some other metal.

I zoomed in on the inside of the goblet, and it looks like either water droplets or pits. I'm leaning towards pewter now as well.

Im with you ARRC. THis is not silver at all. Could be a form of coin silver (Nickel Alloy) to pewter.
Is the metal soft? bend with your hands? It's pewter. If it is not malleable then some type of coin silver IMO
