Possible Piece of Cannon?

I hit up an area with plenty of action during the civil war. After 15 mins or so I found a 3 ringer and a musket ball then I got a really deep signal. I dug done about 3-4 feet and heres what I found. I think the other pice may be an axle. any suggestions?

Looks like an axle to me and very old cant say about the other but I am sure someone will chime in.vanzutphin

Axels on horse or mule drawn wagons, buggies and artillery had tapered spindles on them. The spindle on yours appears to be straight.
