Sadly it's broken. Found in the middle of the woods in ballston spa, ny. Pretty close to saratoga.

It's about 6 inches long, can't find any makers mark or anything like that, it was covered in corrosion.

I could be wrong but it appears to be a Blacksmith made piece of an old hinge for a large door or even a Spring for an old Buggy or Wagon!

I had a feeling it might not be a hatchet head at all, thanks frank

I agree, it's probably a hinge of sorts, except there are no holes to attach it to anything. Without bolt holes I can't think of a use, so my swag is it's unfinished, probably a hinge, but it also could be a blacksmith made, unfinished tomahawk.

Could be made into a hatchet if you want :P

All you need is the following...
Little furnace... a big anvil and a big hammer...
And a whole lot of sweat.

OH I ALMOST FORGOT... A tape of the song "working on the chain gang" to get you in the mood :P

Thanks for all the comments guys. I went back to the woods where i found this hinge and found a ton of more goodies! This was a farm field a long long time ago. I'm so excited to get back there again!
