I had a couple hours to spare after work today so my buddy and I hit a corn field we've had luck in recently. I was working my way down the rows of stumps when I got a high 60's low 70's hit on my AT Pro at about 6" down. Turns out it was directly under one of the chopped stalks. Thought I had another old flat button for a minute until I flipped it over and didn't see any sign of a shank. Can't make out any detail as of yet and I am admittedly nervous to clean it. I'm dying to know what it is but I'm not sure what my next step should be. Looking for some advice on cleaning it. Thanks for looking. Congrats on your find. I see no details at all in your pics. Will be hard to get anything from it, but I would start with a toothpick only. Remember once done, it can't be undone.

Yeah....I've found a few of those toasted old coppers over the years...heck last year I found a US large cent and you could make out the stars along the outer edge....I rinsed it off under the tap and poof there went the details.

I think I would just get an accurate weight of the coin, and the size of it. That may give you your only clues. I would not try to clean it in any way.

Congrats though!

Weight is 6.5 grams and it measures 25.4 millimeters.

I didn't mention it in the thread above but it looks to be copper.

It is in all probability an LC, good luck with trying to get a date. Congrats

Judging by the weight and dimensions, I think it might be a liberty cap half cent.

552 NICE FINDS ...

I found one like that in the Spring. After soaking in Olive Oil, I could just make out the edge of the lines making the head of an older Large Cent.

I'll have to try that, how long did u soak it?

25mm that's most likely an old draped bust or liberty cap half cent!

Beau Ouimette from youtube has a great video on cleaning coppers. I found it very helpful.

great find! good cleanin vid there too!

Great video Helix,, we all can learn from our mistakes,
Thanks for posting

Size and weight are not of a US 1/2 ¢ or LC, most likely is british half penny, and if you can see no detail at all, I ask how could you ruin it ?
I've got a couple hundred of "blank disks" it's just the way it is with many old coppers in the ground for decades, or centuries, luckly though some survive quite well, so get another. There are lots of old goddies in your state, proven by the diggers from there.

Do I see the letter "Y" in your first photo with the quarter, in the lower right side of the coin? Maybe a "Y" from in "Liberty"? The weight looks reasonable for an early Liberty Cap (6.5 grams vs. 6.739 grams) half cent. I think you'd expect the weight to be a bit light in a corroded coin like yours. The diameter though, appears too large (25.4 mm vs. 22 mm). A really cool find in any event, congrats.
