Cool thing. The 'coffee bean' eyes and general decoration suggest it's probably a mesoamerican effigy vessel and perhaps from Mexico.

I would think post-contact but not ancient (assuming it's not a repro souvenir).
 

it looks slip glazed with an applied patina... not old
 

Moved to Indian Artifact forum for more expert opinions.

My opinion for what it's worth, not native American and not ancient. Looks more like tourist pieces sold in Mexico and south in mid 20th century.
