I'm posting these because of the conversation between Rege_PA and I about different types of Pottery found on Ft Ancient sites both here in southern Ohio and his sites in PA. These are some examples of the typical types we find here. We finds Cord Impressed, Punctated, Guilloché(which has intricate lines and patterns), and Plain. Almost all of what we find is shell tempered, though we do find some grit tempered on the Hopewell sites.

Here some pics of the different types, some handle pieces, and some with designs and scalloped edges.

Here's a really large section that probably came from a very large vessel because it is a very thick and sturdy piece.

DorkFish...Thanks for posting the pictures, identical except for the Guilloche pattern. Do you find any pipes made of shell tempered material?

Found this shard NW of Albuquerque, NM. Local Indian museum has a complete pot with the same design. They have it as coming from Chaco Canyon, 850AD-1000AD.

Rege, I've never heard of any found in this area made from shell tempered Pottery. Most of our Pipes are either Pipestone or Sandstone.

I never get tired of looking at your collection, I have just recently got into a site were there is some pottery, mostly small fragments is all that is left :-[

Nice display for sure! I have a lot of fragments and I really do not know much about them. Many are cord marked and many are incised. I need to educate myself more on the subject.

Dork Fish...At last we have a significant difference between the two related cultures, pipes made of pottery are very numerous on Monong sites with stone being much rarer. The baked pottery type was much easier to make, wonder if they appear on Susquehannock and Iroquis sites? They had to get it from somewhere and if it didn`t come up the Mississippi/Ohio drainage it must have come down from NY or over the Appalachians. Strange because we do get Marginella beads and occasionally beads made from the stem of a conch which are prevalent on Ft Ancient sites.
