The main advantage to PI detectors is that they are impervious to highly mineralized soil and salt water. They are also the deepest detectors. Why don't more people use them? They have very little to no ability to discriminate between different metals as VLF machines can do. For instance, a PI will find a rusty bobby pin a foot deep but the signal will be similar as a dime or lead sinker would be while a VLF will be able to tell the difference between the sinker, the bobby pin, and the dime. They are used a lot in underwater exploration and saltwater beaches with less trash. They are also used in the gold fields and relic hunting in heavy mineralized soil such as exists in some parts of VA. For general coin hunting they are not so great since they cannot discriminate.
