Puzzled by the Hole I dug

Ok, I am a Newbie and been MDing about a week now. Just searching my own yard at this time and I was digging a find and about 8 inches down I came across a small tunnel about 3 inches in Diameter, I can put my hand into it as far as I can reach. I do not know of ever having any kind of critters in my yard. Does anyone have any ideas on this, by the way all that was being detected was a 16 penny nail. Thanks in advance.
