Need a little help so I hope I'm in the right spot. I have a 1985 D quarter with very smooth edge, no reeds at all. The quarter is twice as thick as a normal quarter. The front and back are normal. By eye the circumference is the same as a normal quarter. Is this an error, and if so, what's it called? Thanks

Measure the diameter with a micrometer or caliper. I suspect the coin has had the edge rolled.

Sounds like a dryer coin to me.

It's not a dryer coin. The edge is very smooth, and the quarter is twice the thickness of a normal quarter. Front and back are normal. I saw one one eBay and the description said " lamination improper plan her thickness error "

Can we see a pic of the obverse and reverse?

This picture is with a normal quarter.

hi all: looks like it has started to be rolled. tom in central pa.

Maybe a magicians coin? Does it seem like it could open?

Great Pictures...

That coin has me stumped. The surfaces look wrong. The way the breast of the eagle is removed (note the parallel lines, almost as if it were put to a grinder). The rims seem really high. What's the weight?

Not a magicians coin. I have no way to weigh it, I only have a gram scale, 6 grams, but I'm sure it rounds off. I don't know the whole mint process but it looks like it just wasn't compressed hard enough, everything is right on size but it's thicker then a normal quarter and where the reeds should be, it's really smooth.

I hope that link works, it's one I found on eBay...looks like the same thing I have.

My question, is the entire face and reverse of the coin the same thickness as the rim or is it normal?
