Some weeks ago, at work...while going through some rolls (from Brinks), I noticed a silver looking edge. I pulled that coin from the roll and it was a 2001 P North Carolina Quarter.

I also found a 1964 Quarter that same day. Now, of course, the 1964 has a nice ring when dropped on the table, but the 2001 P NC Quarter sounds like a cross between silver and clad...but it's all silver in color...no copper on the edges. I tested this several times with clad Quarters, Bi-centinnel Quarters and the 1964.....

Has anyone else found one like this? I don't think it's a proof, I found one of those already and it doesn't look like that. There's great detail, looks almost brand new. I just never saw one like this before.

Thanks to anyone who can assist me with this one...I am stumped!!

PS: I don't think posting a pic will help, but if need be, let me know and I'll take a pic....

Nick...

I researched the net and could not find anything on it either....I am really stumped as I never ran across one like this. I did take a razor blade with a magnifer glass and tried to see if it would scrape off...Nope! I did it on the edge...to see if maybe the copper would come through...nothing.

I am attaching several pics of it....I have it compared to a Bi-Centennial and a 1964 along with the edges and some close ups of the 2001P. The last pic in order from top to bottom is: 2001P, Bi-Centennial and then the 1964.

The first two pics in order from left to right is: 2001P, Bi-Centennial and then the 1964.

Thanks for any assistances on this one.

How much does the coin weigh compaired to a "normal" coin ?
Struck on a foreign planchet ?
Reconditioned like a 1943 Lincoln steel cent and coated in zinc ? You said that it wont scratch off....

The first thing I would do is weigh it...

Thanks VPR...I'll stop by the coin shop tomorrow while out and see if they can weight it for me...I don't have anything that could weight it. I'll post when I find out the weight. Think I better invest in a scale too while I'm out!

I scraped a bit on the front (oops)....it left a little mark...but nothing came off. I was inspecting the nicks and such around the edge and it seems to be all in silver color.

I will have it weighed with another 2001P North Carolina (to make it all equal, I'll do it with the same state :) ).

Thanks....

There are jokers out there that spray paint edges silver. Kennedy halves have been found with such.

did you take it to get weighed?

Have it weighed. it should weigh 6.25 grams if silver and the clad weigh
5.67 grams.
There were not any silver coins minted in Philly since 1964 with the
exception of the 40% half dollar til 1968. All silver coins since 1992 are
minted in San Francisco.
it is possible that your coin is all outer clad being 75% copper and 25%
nickel mix without the inner layer of pure copper. Possibly from a bad
spot in the metal sheet the coins are punched from.

Just my thoughts.
