Ok, I'm about to hunt a house that the owner burned down to get rid of it off his farm. It was an old civil war house so who knows what will be around it. The main thing (other than I'm sure I'll find a bunch of junk) is will the char/ashes give me a problem? And if so anything I can do to help me get through it. I realize this is a broad question, but please excuse my noobiness. ;D

Be prepared to pick up a lot of metal junk including nails, tin flashing, cast iron and whatever. If you can figure the lay of the land, you might sniff around and find the crapper...sweeter honey in the honey bucket.

Find where they dumped their bottles and old tin....lots of good stuff there....Look for the places where children would hide and play...under old lilacs or in the apples orchards....kids didn't have alot back then and often were given cast offs from the kitchen, their dads medals, buttons ,pocket knives, marbles, etc

Alot of times when people burn the old places, they take any junk (what they figured was junk ) and dump it over a ravine...this is always a great place to find old crocks, stoneware, tools etc

Try to see where any old outbuildings may have been....people then usually had their own blacksmith tools etc and would have set up a place near shade ...lots of tools ...horse shoes.... etc found in areas like this.

Was there a pump or a water source...look along the fastest route to those and as most women set up their washing close to these....there could be some good finds where the clothes were dried or wash water dumped....
Good luck and let us know what you find....and take pics!

A smaller coil will also help you pick through the trash better.
It will provide your machine the opportunity to "see" more individual targets beneath it rather than the multiple targets it will see with a large one.

Okeydokey - thanks for the advice, I never thought of the washing clothes thing. I'll have to ask the guy what they did with the "junk" before they burned it. If I know him, it probably went up in flames with the house and then was gotten rid of. I'll post as soon as I get to hunt it. (weather and work permitting) Of course I could always do some while I "work" depends on how close I can get my truck to it.

Be prepared to dig a lot of old fruit jar lids. These are difficult, if not impossible, to discriminate out.

Nothing suks more than getting in an area with alot of bullets and cw accoutrements and finding a mess of fruit jar lids in the middle of it. But, you almost have to dig them or missing buckles and big coins.

ehh I've got all the time in the world I guess. This guy works with me at the fire dept so it's pretty much open access. I dont figure too many bullets will be there, but I'm hoping coins, ;D. Will the charred coals and stuff cause any problems?

I've hunted a burned down house. Didn't have any problem with charred coals and such. But there were boatloads of "trash". Nails, wire, etc.

It's a shame when someone burns down a house like that before it can be searched on the inside. No telling what was stashed in the walls and floors.
