Question for the Experts

Don't know what your coin looks like but I have some 40% that their side edges look like regular clad halves. 40%ers are coated with silver on the outside when they are produced. Over time, if the coating gets worn out due to wear, the copper on the edges begin to show.

What would a 40% half dollar look like with all the reeding worn off like casino halves commonly found ?
The worn clad casino halves edge looks like pure copper. Would the 40s look that way?
I've never found a 40 that worn, but I've found tons of the worn clad halves.

I am not an expert but I slept at Holiday Inn. I have found a few casino 40s and they look similar to the clad halves with that bright copper ring but there is that silver looking ring that is "brighter" than the nickel ring of the clad.

Hope this helps.

Let me make myself clearer. A clad casino half with all of the reeds worn down looks bright solid copper just like the edge of a penny. Would a silver clad worn down in the same fashion have a solid copper edge?
The reason that I ask is that I primarily edge search, only looking at the whole coin when I get a suspicious looking edge. I've never found a 40% with the reeds worn completely away like the clad casino halves.

Rich,

The casino 40 will have a bright copper ring too. The way to tell the difference is that the Nickel portion of the ring of the clad is not as bright as the silver ring of the 40. I sometimes miss them by site but hear them most of the time.

Rich , I think I actually may take a 40% half and subject the reeded edge to an abrasive wheel
( less course than a sander ) just to see what it looks like . I suspect that it will not appear as
if it is entirely copper , because as I understand it , these are a sandwich , with silver- copper and
silver . I'll report on my results tomorrow afternoon . Argentium.

I'll look forward to reading the results.

Sorry Rich! It take me a while to upload a picture of some casino worn 40%ers. The lighter and shinner are 40%ers.

I have some that were worn off all the rim. But I couldn't locate them now. The difference would be the same, slightly lighter and shinner.
