Metal Detecting
Got done playing 9 holes and had the itch to get some detecting in before dark. I started at an abandoned playground and dug three plugs before I was asked to leave by an older gentleman. He walked across from a church and asked me what I was doing and didn't want me tearing up the lawn. I apologized and told him to have a good night... looked public to me.

Stopped at an abandoned house I've been eye balling for a few weeks. I had a hard time sweeping the coil with all the brush and trees... got a nice crisp 90 signal and out popped a SLQ on my 1st hole! First silver coin in a few weeks for me and I've been looking hard. Got 2 more signals before dark but it was junk.

Great find. What's the general policy on hunting abandoned houses? There's a couple in my neighborhood I've been eyeing up, and I once saw some other detectorists at one, but I'm not sure if I should hit them. I don't even know how to go about getting permission for them.

wow cool find...nice gutter hanger too

I'm not a 100% sure Jack. I've been on the fence about hunting it for that reason, but I can't find any information related to the house anywhere online :dontknow:

Hunting without knowing if you are allowed might be thrilling but it is absolutely wrong. The powers that be do not need any more justifications to simply outlaw all metal detecting. Don't add to the fire.

Awesome find, especially for a quick hunt!

Going to stop by the tax assessors office tomorrow and see if I can find any info. What I did was wrong apparently, live and learn.

If the house is abandoned, it is probably bank owned. You would have to start at your county office & start checking the records. A lot of times the bank will list the house for sale with a realtor, who I then check with for permission.

You get permission from the realtor? That's great, I live in the foreclosure capital of the country and there are empty houses with realtor signs up everywhere. I always thought it would be weird to ask the realtor, but I guess not.

If your county has online gis and tax info it can save you a trip.
Love the gis system round here. Great for finding public property that may not be glaringly obvious. Also tells you who owns what.

I've called the realtor listed on a for sale sign on multiple occasions. Usually, they contact the land/house owner and ask for me. I'm hitting about 50% on getting permissions from these.

congrats on the quarter  those standing quarters seem to be a bit rare for me

I live in more of a rural small town area of the County, & most Counties around me are the same, until you head North towards Chicago. A lot of the realtors give me permission, but as with a homeowner, some will not. It just depends on a given situation.
