One thing that worked for me with no-pinpoint machines like the 2200 and the Fast Tracker was to guesstimate the location and confirm it by giving the coil a little shake. A detector with reasonably fast recovery will give a series of beeps and should be close to the target.

That said I remember one nightmarish session at a local park when I failed to make a recovery on ten consecutive targets. This led me to get a ProPointer. Problem solved.

Once you locate your target, crank your sensitivity way back to narrow it down.
This should help quite a bit.

If you can't afford a pinpointer at the moment, you can always get a Cen-tech Handheld metal detector from Harbor Freight Tools for about 17 bucks. Just be prepared to replace the switch before long. Once you do that it's an adequate tool until you can get a better one.

Good Luck.

I have a Lone Star, same machine, to pinpoint, work your coil toward the center if target area then wiggle the coil back off the target. When the signal stops the target is under the outer ring to the tip of coil! This works on every model I have ever owned! Hope that helps you

I have the Discovery 2200 and I do the x thing then I move a little in a circle and do the x thing again.I don't always do the circle move,I do the cross move and just pay attention to where the beep starts and stops. If your looking for coins this thing will find them.I've went over spots that other detector's have gone over and I don't know if they just don't want to dig for the coins or what but I always find them.I don't care if it's showing me it's just a penny,I want it...lol
