Rain And The White's XLT.

My day ended abruptly when rain stopped my XLT from working.
I removed the battery and replaced it and still no good.
Went home. Completely dissembled the entire thing. Opened the display housing, stripped-out the ribbon cable, even removed the trigger switch, keypad, and speaker. Cleaned all of it and now I'm waiting for the RTV I used to re-seal everything to cure.

I am considering what to do to prevent this from happening again. I want to replace the main and display housings with appropriately sized Otter Boxes.

Has anyone out there done this type of thing to a White's E-Series detector?

Yes, I could buy a detector that's made to use underwater, but I don't need a second unit and considering this one is way out of warrantee, replacing the housings would be the most cost-effective solution.

Point me in the right direction!

Repair was successful, XLT working like before the rain.
I guess I got lucky this time. :)

WOW,that was close,u may exhale now

Re: Rain And The White's XLT.

I carry a clear plastic bag and slide it over my XLT's box and display head. When It stops raining I just pull it off and I'm ready to go.

Re: Rain And The White's XLT.

I hear ya,

I own an XLT as well and after a day at the beach I decided that I need a waterproof detector. I assume that an otter box is like a pelican case? I was thinking the same thing and infact might just go through with it. Replace the battery and circuit board housing with a Pelican case. Do the same for the display......voila! Surf XLT! I agree all detectors should be made at least water resistant. I don't have the funds for a beach detector....so this might be a good route to follow....

Any ideas, or tips could help.....if it works....I could let you know.

Re: Rain And The White's XLT.

I ended up sending my XLT to White's for a look-see. They replaced the search coil, display, and sub-display boards.
I have not received it yet, mail seems to be lagging around these parts. I think that as they did not mention any problems with water damage, the problems I reported were not judged to be water related. The detector is about 10 years old (near as I can guess) and it was doing some stupid things before I "washed" it in the rain.
I should be in good shape now, however I still intend to look at re-boxing the electronics against water.

If you (or anyone reading this thread) do make some modifications, perhaps this thread can be a common communication point for XLT water-proofing mods.

Goodnight!!! How much did that cost you?? search coil, display, and sub-display boards!!!? Was there some kind of extended warranty?

Re: Rain And The White's XLT.

Whites makes a good 2 piece rain and dust cover for the XLT, $21.95 at KellyCo. I got one for all my detectors, don,t leave home without it. A lot cheaper and easier then adding boxes.

Re: Rain And The White's XLT.

Ed, Yes I like the covers.....but they won't help much if you are water hunting. I want to make my XLT waterproof. That way I don't have to worry about it when I am water hunting. I can also go out deeper without fear of waves and accidentally dropping it into the water. I am just looking for an excuse for a project really.

Re: Rain And The White's XLT.

OK, I think I got it all sorted out.....ground squirrel was right.....Otterboxes look like the way to go. I will take some measurments tonight and scheme up a plan quickly.......for I am going camping soon!!!!

Hello Beach!

Huizer,

First, let me compliment your on the choice of your avatar... :)

I plan to approach this project from two directions.
Plan 1
Remove the circuit cards from the existing White's housings and put them into Otter Boxes... or,
Plan 2
Take several Otter Boxes and "cut-n-paste" them together using my table saw and my 80 tooth blade to section boxes until I get the sizes I need to enclose the existing White's housings. I like plan 2 better as it will result in a really cool looking XLT, recognizable to others as an XLT with a water tight housing. :)
Plan 1 would be the more reasonable one. :)
Plan 2 will cost considerably more, while plan one will be cooler to look at... "innards" and all for everyone to see.

My XLT is still not back yet. So no progress to report.

Re: Rain And The White's XLT.

Received my detector last Thursday (7/20/06) and got to use it for 2 hours on Sunday. Wow, it really works better!
I didn't find anything noteworthy, however it was a pleasure just using it! Can't wait to get in some real searching.

White's really does live up to the reputation they have earned!
