Found this coin in Southport N.C. I thought it was a token until I saw the 1870 at the bottom. Put the very small name across the bottom of the seated lady with the date 1870 in search and The Coin Site came up. It says that it's a copper pattern from Spain which was a proposal for potential coinage. It says it's very valuable depending on condition. Says to have it authenticated and put it on an appropriate auction to find out value. I have no idea how to do that. Can anyone help me? Also found my first CW three ringer, I guess. And a neat buckle (not cw). Man! those bullets are huge arnt they.

Very nice stuff. I don't know anything about your coin. If it is very valuable, don't rely on Ebay. Find a good auction house. I wouldn't really know where to start except for the Yellow Pages or on the Web.

Nice finds, RKinOI!

I would suggest first comparing your coin to those shown in Krause & Mishler's Standard Catalog of World Coins, 1801-1900. Although I am not an expert on Spanish numismatics, your coin appears to match the details of the regular Spanish 10 centimos of 1870. More than 170 million of these coins were struck:

http://www.fuenterrebollo.com/faqs-numismatica/1870-10ctos.html

Note that the seated figure is facing and pointing to your right as you view the coin; on the reverse, the lion stands on its hind feet and looks back to your left, and the shield is on your right.

On the two rare pattern coins, the seated figure faces and points to your left as you view the coin. On the reverse, the lions are on all fours, not standing on their hind feet. The shields are different as well: on one pattern, the shield is still on the right side but is of a different shape; on the other pattern, the shield is oval as on your coin, but is on the left side instead of the right.

If after checking these details in the book &/or comparing them to similar coins online, you still feel that your coin is a rare and valuable variety, then do a Google search for PCGS and ANACS. These are the two premier authentication and grading services, not only for U.S. coins but for most foreign coins as well.

Hey, RK, it's still a great find— in fact, they all are! A 127-year-old coin, a Minie, and neat old buckle... mighty fine, I'd say!

Great finds. I lived on Oak Island a few years ago, but I wasn't into detecting....I was wondering what people were finding down there. Congrats.

Those 3 ringer's did a number on those poor guy's...Great find's and keep us posted when you get back.HH!!
