When looking for old finds, it helps if you can read the signs of past human activity. Maybe a tiny shard of Roman or Medieval pottery. A slight change of the soil colour, or tiny bits of iron, clicking through the discrim, in a certain area of a quiet field. When looking for modern finds, the signs tend to be less subtle.
