Can you all tell me what this was used for. It came from a Civil War camp. I had never saw another like it untill I was on the Fort Donaldson Relic site and they had one they dug in a display. It's like it is a lid to something? Or maybe it was a rosette off a saddle? I'm just not sure. I e-mailed the folks at Fort Donaldson and they to were not sure what it was. They thought it might have came off a trunk? Any help would be great. Here is the link to the Donalson site that has the exact duplicate of mine. Look at the 7th picture from the top. Thanks, Tsgman

I'm certainly not a civil war relic expert--far from it. However, I think this item may be a rosette. If so, it would have been part of the harness or bridle for horses. Does it have a bar on the reverse?

No, but here is a pic of the back side. Thanks, Tim

Rosette would be my guess too although a large one? Monty

Could be a rosette or off of a trunk, I have to agree with John and the folks at FD relics....they're good people.

TSG,
I was looking for a Revolutionary War skirmish site in my area and found one that I think is very similar to yours. It was in a wooded area behind some warehouses and I thought it was some sort of old home decorative junk from a tin roof or something that was dumped in the woods. I'll have to check my unidentified pile of junk to see if I still have it...I hope I did not throw it away. Other then that I have no clue what it is...???

I'm thinking that's a rosette shell from a horse's harness. The part that goes across the front of the horse's body at the bottom of its neck. Maybe an artillery horse?

Looks to me like a can lid. Tuna fish can size maybe a little bigger. Either way when i saw the back i got a lid out of the picture.

Its a real nice one, what ever it is Tsgman.

I found an original civil war rosette - its not the type a horse wears, it is the type that soldiers wear on their civilian clothes.
Thanks for the info and the photo's. I have a question to ask you, what is the size, diameter of the brass items in your photos? Thanks again. Tsgman

I think its a large rosette that was like the ones that fastened to the side of your spur....

I found one in Central Jersey a while back. It seemed too soft & pliable to be any thing of value, so I think I discarded it. I think it was tin. WHat is yours made of?

Tim, I Have A WhatsIt From A Federal Camp, But I Think That It Is Too Large To Be A Bridal Rosette, Maybe A Lid To A Condiment Jar Of Some Kind... trk5capt...

Looks to be brass.

Yes I have dug some of these also, I have always wondered what they were. This forum is great, all these people and someone always comes through with an answer.
