Found at a colonial house site about 6 inches down. Looks like it could be off a horse's saddle.

It's a suspender clip I have the exact same one I was convinced it was something to hold a ribbon and medal but it was determined to be a suspender clips circa 1850

A close inspection of the back should show the clamp for the strap
