It looks to be a Papal Indulgence..... I'm not Catholic, but I seem to remember it as being sort of a "half off your time in Purgatory" kind of thing. I don't think it's the signature of a Pope because it looks to say "Archbishop........." under the signature.

I would imagine it is not a common thing to find, and that there would interest to collectors. Hopefully someone who knows more than I do will come along and fill in the details

Nola_ken....thanks for your input. It seems authentic--would you agree that it is? In your opinion, is there any value in this piece....? $10? $100? $1000?
Thanks.

I'm sure it's authentic, to a Catholic a forged Indulgence would be a sin, and much worse than not having one at all, and if someone were going to forge one for the collector market I think they would likely pick a much older one.

Value wise, I honestly have no idea. I found one on ebay that was similar age, with a picture of John XXIII that sold for $15.99, and there are a few others listed for sale there.

Honestly, if it were mine, at that price, I would look to see if I could find the church the family named on it were members of, and see if they have any interest in it for their archives. If not I'd likely frame it and put it up on my wall of religious items I have.... (I find a LOT of this kind of thing here, I have a lot more in storage because I would need a much bigger wall)

I don't want to seem sacrilegious, since that is honestly not my intent. But in reading the paper, it seems almost like a form letter since there are blanks left for personal information such as his/her. Also, without knowing Latin, this looks like a request, not necessarily a note granting an indulgence.

As I understand it, the person seeking the Indulgence would purchase this paper, add their info and then it would be sent to The Vatican for approval, and once signed and blessed by the church it would be returned to them. The hand written part at the bottom of the text I'm assuming is the approval, but I can't read it

Thanks for the assistnce....I picked it up for cheap. Honestly, I'd prefer to give it back to the family-but it's been about 50 years old. Dont want to keep it or trash it--and feel odd selling it...thoughts?

My thoughts would either find their church and donate it to them, or to your local historic society. If you run into dead ends there, I'd be happy to add it to my collection of religious things...
