Removing caked on dirt?

What’s the best way to remove the caked on dirt from relics like buckles, buttons and small iron objects?. An Ultra sonic cleaner, Electrolysis or another method? I usually just toothpick things since I don’t like getting relics or coins wet.

Electrolysis is good for removing rust. If it’s just dirt that you are dealing with, the best method that I have found is to soak the object in distilled water. Each day use a toothpick to work at getting the dirt off a little at a time and make sure you change the water daily.
