Looks like they had just left port, too. That had to be hell on both sides of the equation. If you're on the merchant ship you live in a state of terror the entire journey. If you're in the sub you are in a nasty ass WWI era sub that is probably more uncomfortable than a prison cell in Mississippi. I do find it interesting that they were hauling coal. I didn't realize that Scotland had such a surplus that it wouldn't be restricted at the height of a war. Also an interesting reference to, "the many thousands of merchant ships known to have been lost in UK waters that remain listed as missing or have been incorrectly identified due to a lack of high-quality data."
