Detector(s) used
Minelab Explorer SE w/SunRay X-1, X-5 and X-8 / Whites XLT / Whites GM3
I hit a yard last year real hard, and didn't come up with much. I walked with away with a single Wheatie then. Thought I'd give another shot today with the new rig.. and got some keepers!!

Hello

All the coins were found approximately 3-5". That's standard depth for these coins in my area. IH was at the 5", Merc was at 3.5".. and the wheaties were all about 3".

I'm in all metal mode with small (8" SunRay) disc, with sensitivity at 22 (auto) using ferrous tones.

Thanks!

When I hunted this yard I was using my trusted Whites XLT. I just recently bought a Minelab Explorer SE. I'm not using the stock coil.. and used a 8" SunRay coil. I think there are two huge factors from last years hunt vs this year with these two detectors.

#1 The yard is full of nails. I was getting a lot of nulling on the XLT, where I'm running in 'All Metal' with the SE. I should have pulled the disc off on the XLT the last time. I was able to hear good targets in the barage of signals. For whatever reason, I never used 'tones' in the XLT (that was a bad move.. and I regret it now).

#2 I was using the stock 10.5 coil on the XLT. Again with all the nails, I was having problems with that large surface area. The Minelab is using a smaller coil (8"). I'd like to try again with a 5". Since I switched to the SunRay 8", I've been literally blown away by it. It's a great coil.

The XLT has been an awesome machine. I've found a pile of keepers with that unit, and still want to keep it for certain conditions. The SE has been challenging road, since I'm trying to adopt some techniques I was not use to (all metal mode and tones)... but I think I'm finally getting the hang of it.

WTG DB!!!!, By the way I love your website!

Nice finds. I like finding IH's better than mercs and rosies.

It is a challenge going from a white's to a minelab. It took me a while. I pretty much go with the 7.5" coil on my machine unless there are not a lot of targets.

Me too! IH/Barbers are what I'm usually gunnin' for. That's the oldest that are in my area.

I'm really happy with the 8". I think that range (7-8") is a great. Hopefully, I'll have a 5" in my near future. I'm still waiting for a low target area to take advantage of the stock coil.
