Well let's just start with my alternate title option:
"Felt like a kid in candy store - even the second time through"
If that doesn't portray my results, let me get to more details. I'll try not to ramble too much but even just remembering makes me smile.
I had to stay at home yesterday to tend for my son who had the flu. In the afternoon, he seemed to be feeling better and I had a bunch of rejects from the other day, so I decided to take a drive a little farther from home and cash em in as well as stop by a couple of banks I hadn't been to yet. First couple of stops netted me nothing but $2 in clad halves.
Third stop was a small town Wells Fargo to get a box of nickels for my son to look through and since they had a sealed $500 in halves I decided, why not they're bound to get better sometime. (For those that don't know I have had almost zero luck in boxes from the local Wells Fargo branches). Well after we left there, I went a couple of blocks down to another bank and asked for halves. The one teller had $13 dollars worth and I could see the one silver so I bought all of them. As I was talking to the tellers I asked if I could buy any halves from their coin counting machine. They said I could buy the bag when it gets full, but not before. So I asked how full it was, well it held $539.50. I asked if I could cash in some halves to fill the bag so I could buy it and they said sure, but not until after 3 pm (It was 2:55). So to buy the bag I needed to cash in $460.50 in halves.
Well lucky for me I had just bought that "useless" box of halves at Wells Fargo a few minutes earlier. So of course I proceed to go out to the car and tear through the box of WF halves at mach speed (which had 0 silver by the way) and get enough to buy the $1000 bag from the coin machine. About 15 minutes or so later, I walk back in and cash in my $460.50 in halves only to get them back with an additional $539.50 worth. A first for me, cashing in worthless halves only to buy them back intentionally.
Note: The teller offered a room for me to bring in the box of halves to open only so I could cash them in...another first.
Of course as I am talking to the teller after I buy the halves, she mentions that the reason they don't have any rolls is that every time that they get them a customer buys all they have, but they haven't had any for a while.... So at that point I am figuring well, hope the coin counting machine is accurate and I don't have to pay to get rid of their searched halves for them... :P
After I get done there, I put the bag in the trunk and took off for home. Of course on the way home, I passed another bank and I still had cash, so I stopped and picked up a box of pennies and another box of nickels as well as my third $2 red seal US note in a week (hadn't found before last week, now they are seemingly everywhere.)
After I got home I brought in the halves and dumped them on a open newspaper on the floor for a quick glance through (handful at a time). The first 5-10 handfuls produced nothing but a quarter and a $10 peso coin from Mexico. But after that it seemed like every handful or two had more goodies. First a few 40%'ers. Then Ben made an appearance and then his brother joined in. More 40%. More Brothers. An aunt (Walking Liberty).. You get the picture. I was just giddy and smiling from ear to ear. I wasn't going through looking at mintmarks since I only had a few minutes, but after I got all done with the first pass. I had the following:
1 Walking Liberty
1 - 1943
6 Franklins
1 - 1957-D
1 - 1959-D
1 - 1961-D
1 - 1962-D
2 - 1963-D
2 - 90% Kennedy
2 - 1964-D
27 - 40% Kennedy
3 - 1965
4 - 1966
12 - 1967
3 - 1968-D
5 - 1969-D
Also the following oddball stuff since it was a bag and not rolls.
1 - US Quarter
1 - Canada Two Dollar Coin (1996)
1 - Mexico, 10 Pesos (2002
3 - Mexico, 10 Pesos (2005)
1 - Mexico, 1 Peso (1976)
1 - Sweden, 5 Kronor (1984))
1 - Slug/copper washer type thing
So, today I finally had a chance to finish going through the bag to look for mintmarks and other stuff.
About halfway through the bag what do I find, a 1967. A few handfuls later, another 1967. It started to feel like I was searching an unsearched bag again
, or like somebody was added silver as I was removing the coins. The first time I've ever so thoroughly enjoyed searching a bag that I had already searched (made that kid in a candy store feeling last oh so much longer in anticipation as I was hoping I missed a franklin or walker). And in the last handful, out pops a 1977-S.
Ended up finding these during the second pass though the same bag:
6 - 1967
1 - 1968-D
1 - 1977-S
1 - 2004-D
11 - 2005-P
1 - 2005-D
1 Canada two dollar (1996) (total was 2)
1 US Quarter (total was 2)
So all told there was
34 - 40% Kennedys
2 - 90% Kennedys
6 - Franklins
1 - Walker
+ the foreign/other stuff mentioned above.
As part of the second pass I did a count since this was loose and not rolled. I was curious how much I gained or lost based on machine count.
There were 1998 objects (coins/other) in the bag.
$993.50 was in half dollars.
8 Foreign coins
1 Slug
2 Quarters
So it cost me a few dollars to buy the bag, but boy was it worth it.
By far my best bag ever, about 1 silver for every $12 in halves in the original bag.
I'll update on the pennies and nickels once they are opened.
Meanwhile here are some pictures. The bottom row is the 2004-2005 stuff.
Note the other first for me in the last picture a dateless Kennedy with a solid rim.
