These are known among collectors as "Persian" flasks. When they are flattened, they are known as "Persian saddle flasks." The string of glass (usually spiral) around the neck may be a stylized snake to ward off poisons, but they are functional in providing a grip on the bottle and in catching drips.

Age is uncertain because these bottle have been made for a long time, and are probably still being made. Your friend should take the flask to a bottle show to get some in-hand opinions on age.

This is the best advise anyone on Tnet can give you that is not a expert in those types of bottles... I am putting a link to the NJ bottle club that will do a free appraisal thru email... Just make sure all pics are large enough for them to see.. like example make all pics the same size as the first pic on your post
