Looks to be an old center fire cartridge but no markings of any kind on the bottom, a bit smaller than a dime as you can see.
The rim flange is very pronounced...seems a lot bigger than anything I am familiar with. I found it with the stick shoved in it as you see, which probably saved it as it is paper thin with age and wear.

Any idea?...found on the west coast.

It appears to be a cartridge-casing made in the 1870s for the Springfield .50-70 Rifle ...but measurement of the casing's diameter in hundredths-of-an-inch is needed for certainty in identifying it.

I owned a 50-70 at one time, and from what I can tell in the photo, I think the case is a little long for a .50. The extra .005 inch really shortened the case when filled with 70 grains of powder. If it's a .50 caliber, it could be a .50-90 Sharps. Need measurements or just guessing from a photo.
