After the disappointment of discovering that some one dug the hell out of my river bank I decided to give it another look this morning. I didn't find anything digging but found two bottles that the other digger left behind they must not be a fan of conn bottles because they left a Yale brewing company bottle right on top of a dirt pile . Then just scratching through the loose dirt I found a really odd conical ink or is it mucilage? It's taller then other conicals I have dug. What do you folks think. Next weekend ill start at a new site I hope it pays off. Thanks for looking- Justin

That is great relicdude. I'm glad you could end this saga on a good note. Definitely looks like a mucilage to me. Congrats on the local bottle as well

Good to see there were still a few there, I like those early crown tops.

Hey Justin,

Glad you got back and found a couple keepers. I'm voting mucilage on the cone.

Good luck at the new spot.

Thanks everyone I thought it was most likely a mucilage. I'm thinking since they left those behind they were looking for the early American stuff which I doubt they found any. I'm thinking the person that found my spot knows who I am and knows what came out. Because my spot was not easily accessed I'm going to be a lot more careful now and it's a lesson learned.

He'd be pretty dumb if he thought he was gonna find another amazing ink bottle like yours because everything else that's come out of your spot was nowhere near as old as your Pitkin, it was a late throw right? Some people have no respect for others. There are some people on this site who're here just to steal spots, disgusting.

Exactly the ink had to be a late throw because most of the stuff I dug was mostly 1870s to 1890s and nearly all the pontiled era bottles were nothing but shards. Maybe if that's case they thought if there's one there's more which is pipe dream that was a once in a lifetime find.

For sure, you definitely got to the best stuff first.

Your first mistake was bottles from my hometown - Winsted. Second was river dump. This is all one would need to find your dump. Bottle digging is a very competitive hobby. There is a lot of disrespect along with respect. I posted my digs on another website and had the same thing happen all the time. There are some lazy diggers who can't take the time to find dumps on their own, nor can they start their own holes. You can say it's fair game. I certainly didn't own any dump that I ever dug in. The key is to be more secretive. Don't show any local bottles from the town you are digging in. Just show the national stuff or should I say mass produced. You have found some really good bottles and one great bottle in your dump. There are plenty still there. Hopefully in your new spot, if it produces well, you will heed my advice. Keep up the good work, and hopefully you will find a loaded, early dump that you can keep to yourself. RC

Thanks for the advice and lesson learned this was my first real dig for glass. It's a shame it's so cut throat and the posting the locals slipped my mind that it could lead to my location and rush got the best of me. I would like to know who hunted my spot out I don't think there to local because I don't know anyone that digs glass in the area. And I hope they found nothing but slicks.

Glad they left you a couple !!

TxThunter...
I gave Justin the same advice, I just put it in a PM. Your advice hit the nail on the head. There are a lot of lazy people out there and if someone purposely goes hunting for someone's dig site, I think that is really hitting below the belt!!! :nono:I think it goes against some unwritten bottle digging rules, is unfair and low-life. I know that it is not "illegal" or "fair game" but I still think it is unethical. :angry7::angry7: What does everyone else think?:icon_scratch:

Agreed. Its just not right to hunt someone else's site that is obviously presently being hunted

For sure, there shouldn't even be any question because there was fresh dirt, the person who did it knew he was robbing Justin's spot.

Like I said before even when I'm out with my detectors and I notice there's fresh plugs dug I won't hunt there. If this person did find my spot from the Internet from postings on Facebook or here on tnet I want them to know that they could if contacted me and I would be willing to take some one out for a dig you don't need to poach my spot that's just squirely as hell. Maybe I just have my own code of ethics but i notice a lot of you feel the same way also. Some people don't like to do there own research to find spots and are in it to make a few bucks. Myself I'm in it to recover history.

I have been a bottle hunter and digger for almost 30 years. Half the fun for me is going out and exploring for a new dump. I am like a bloodhound for glass. If it's there, I will find it. I have a more than full-time job which limits my digging time. There are some who dig for a living and will do whatever it takes to find bottles. The ethics and etiquette have declined over the years, just as it has with detecting. You take someone to a special and secret place and that person might tell another and another, etc. I have read many post talking about detectorists hunting without permission ruining for the people who actually had permission. Hopefully more people will post when this happens, and maybe it will be a lesson learned for the people doing the ruining and they might actually feel bad for what they have done. You and sefox87 have a lot of enthusiasm and I see plenty of success coming your way. RC
