I take $2000.00 to purchase halves when I'm going on a day trip to buy halves. I haven't run out of money yet. It's highly unlikely you will find that much in halves but I rather be safe than sorry and come across a large amount and not be able to purchase them after traveling a long distance.

It also helps to find out (from your bank) where any other fee free ATMs might be located in the area you are searching.

This way, should you happen to run out of cash, there is an "oasis" near by.

Don't rule out, if you have time to search while on the road (figuratively, not literally) , finding a bank you're visiting to dump any rejects. There are many out there with coin counters which non-members may also use.

My Mondays road trip I took $1,500 and needed most all of it. Spent over $400 in one town then I found a bag at another town that had $970, all my finds came from that last bag. If I only had $1,000 I would have missed the bag and only had 1-40% for my effort!

Took plenty of money to a small, isolated town a couple days ago, which had 3 banks. Only one bank had any halves at all, and only 2 rolls worth. Did score 1 - 40%, so it wasn't a total skunk, just dissapointing that there were not more rolls there in town. I always have more money with me than rolls are to be found.

$1000 to $2000 or more depending on what I have available. Though all of my trips have been either 2 hour afternoon trips or Saturday morning trips. For a full day I would probably need to plan accordingly so I would have dump banks along the way.

On one of my Sat morning trips I ran out of cash and had to do a quick search and dump so I could continue.

I am still trying to figure out when I can take an all day weekday trip to my parents house (typ. 3-4 hour drive). Unless the banks on the route I choose are different than what I have been typically running into, probably need at least $3000 and probably more to not cash in on the way there. I won't know until I try.

Thanks for the advice. I only went to one very small town bank so far. They had $400 in halves that had been collecting over time. I only found 2 40%ers. The teller told me someone had brought in a bunch of older halves a few weeks earlier but someone that worked there bought them all.
