Hey Guys/Gals

My son and I found this walking around our property. He wanted to know what it is was and I was unable to find an answer from Dr. Google. I am hoping you guys can help me out. Rust covered rock/mineral. When broken open it has a shiny black look. Hematite? That is my best guess.

I noticed this was your very first post - so, Welcome Aboard Rusty97! You didn't list your state (or country) in your profile. So, you might consider jumping over to Sub-Forum: Select Your Area.... for information (i.e., clubs, hunts, finds, legends, maps, etc.) directly related to your state (or country). You might also consider adding your state (or country) to your displayed profile (SETTINGS -> EDIT PROFILE) - members may have more success helping you (your location may help, etc.)...

Either hematite or geothite, maybe with some limonite is what it looks like to me, my best guess from a photo, do a streak test, is it magnetic? Maybe do a specific gravity test as well to better nail it down.

Your probably right on the identification of hematite, Alabama mined 375million tons of it from 1840 to 1975 and is the state mineral.

Give the shiny black portion a streak test, rub it on a bit of white porcilien, if the color is rusty red you have hematite.
