rock piles

I live in nh where stone walls are pretty common. Near some of these are round piles of stones. Does anyone know if these mean something. They're usually in a area where I believe a house used to be. Any help would be great!!!

round stones? or piles of stone in a circle?

some natives lived in pit structures...todays remains are piles of rocks...normally in a circle...like a round pyramid.

It's possible that someone filled in some water wells as safety measures to prevent humans or cattle / horses from falling in and getting trapped.
