Rocks !

This area is very rocky as well. Sometimes the rocks throw off my pinpointing and I have to dig a slightly bigger hole. Afterwards I just put all the rocks / dirt back in the hole and step on it to pack it.

They sale small hand held pinpointers, but I have never seen one in person. Perhaps someone with one of those can let us know how well they pinpoint.

Have a good un.,

the handheld pinpointers work well, but they are mostly designed for finding coins in holes that are already dug. they generally only detect to a depth of an inch or two because of this. the sunray probes are the exception to the rule though as i have heard they actually function like a mini coil and get more depth. you would have to talk to a sunray owner to get the skinny on one of those though. as far as rocky soil, i dont really have any earth breaking tips there. sometimes i run into that hard packed gravel around here and unless its just a super spot with tons of potential, ill just move on to another spot with easier diggings.

If you are digging "in the wild" then something like this might help. I use it in "wild areas" where a neat cover-up is not necessary. I still kick the dirt back into my holes even in the "wild", but, this is the tool to get the job done. In rocky areas a typical sharpshooter from the Depot is not only back breaking, but, very frustrating as well. Maybe you don't have access to a welder, but, maybe you can get someone to make something similar for you.

I also picked up this handy little gadget today and I already dug up 2 keys, a 64 nickel, a Hotwheels airplane and 3 pennies, from my yard in 30 minutes.
