Ran through 5 random rolls of nickels.
The oldest was a 1954 D in reasonable condition. I found a 1969 S and a 1970 S. Also a 2005 D buffalo, it doesn’t appear to be “lanced”.
I didn’t do a full count, but well over half of the coins were 2000 or newer. As usual there were a few 1964 pieces: 2 no mint mark and 3 Ds.
The 1950s nickels are out there, but the numbers I find are dwindling a lot over the last 3 years. Thanks for viewing

I do not think there are fewer older nickles. There are billions of newer nickles you have to search through to get to the older ones. I started back coin roll hunting in 2009. Think how many new nickles are out there now since then to clutter up the search.

Keep on Searching

As a percent of the whole, there are less older ones each year. No “new” 1947 nickels were added this year, but a plethora of 2023 nickels were. The percentage gets naturally less each year. I realize that the mintages didn’t change for any one year after it was established.
