Rolls of Pennies and some pocket change

After reading and reading this forum, I decided to finally dive in. I started weakly..... while grocery shopping, I got 4 rolls of pennies from the cashier.....

Skunked.

Then, I went through some change I had at home (ended up being $300.00 worth... mixed). Please read to the end.. I have a couple of questions.

Cents

1918, 1925, 1945, 1946(3), 1947, 1952, 1956D (2), 1959 (4), 1959D

Nickels

1940 (3), 1941, 1947 (2), 1951, 1954D, 1957D, 1956D (2), 1958D, 1959, 1960D (2), 1961D (2), 1962, 1962D, 1963 (2), 1964, 1964D (3)


In addition to that, I kept a handful of the new nickel types, 2 Sac Dollars, Several Quarter BiCentenials, and a lot of foreign money.

Questions:

Dimes: I must have gone through $50 worth of dimes.. and saw nothing?!?!?? I think the oldest I found was a 64... not positive though, however, tons of 66 and up. After seeing this site, I know the magic numbers are 64 and down..... any thoughts why I wouldn't find any old dimes? Just bad luck?

Quarters: Not a single find. Again (like dimes), just bad luck, or could there be a more sinister underlying tone (like one of you already searched my change).

Nickels: I had great luck with them.... why the success? Are the nickels not popular to search, so there is more to find?

Welcome to the group groovedymond.

The reason dimes and quarters don't produce much (it's the same way for me) is when the silver was removed in 1965 the hoarding started. Then in 1979-80 when silver hit $50 an ounce the melting started. A good chunk of the dime and quarter populations were gone forever. You still can find them once in a great while (dimes are luckier than quarters usually) but not very often.

Nickels on the other hand only changed their metal composition briefly from 1942-45 so it's not uncommon to find dates from early in the series still in circulation.
