Most of this post is Friday's stuff, the 16 Roman Coins we got today in 3 hours.

(Fri) We did 2.5 hours on the Roman Lion Field & got 13 Scrappies. After lunch we decided to move to a nearby field that for years has been pasture & was recently ploughed to set fresh grass for the horses.(2.5 hrs) On the face of it the new field (old permission) looked promising, it was close to a medieval monastery farm & was less than 50 metres from the back of an 18th C Manor House. We were hoping for hammered - modern finds.
Well less than 20 minutes into the scouting mission, I had a hammered, but after 2.5 hours & some gridding that ended up being the best find.

Fossil
The strangest longest spoon handle I have seen, & its broken off at the top, so even longer! Ideas?
Roman Lead Steelyard Weight
13 Roman Bronze Coins (Fri)
16 Roman Coins (Today)- best was a large Billon Follis- IMPDIOCLETIANVS P AVG – Laureate and Cuirassed Bust right 28.59mm 10.12gm
1560-61 Lizzy Groat - My first Groat of Lizzy, got 2 Shillings & lots of Sixpences. Being the size of a later Sixpence, that's what I thought it was until I saw the mintmark at home - fairly scarce second issue coin.

Good stuff Cru, I'm stumped on that spoon as well. Not only is it an incredibly long handle but it is very oddly shaped.

It also has 2 bits of decoration on the 'reverse' :tongue3:

Maybe it was for feeding really ugly babies that you didn't want to get to close to :laughing7:

Your killing man .
Dreams of dreams to hunt a field like that .

I had a dream start to 2016, until today, I was 3 silver for 3 outings (1 each trip). This is good for what is normally one of the tougher months.

Awesome finds as usual Cru  Those old British hammered coins are sweet. I would love to dig something like that over here... except I think stillrollin300 is cleaning them all out :laughing7:

Yea Yea Yea :dontknow: I'm giving colonial a break this week and heading to a Civil War spot. So you have a chance to sneak past me on those old colonial silvers

As always Cru some awesome digs! Thanks for posting, really enjoy seeing the treasures y'all dig.

Todays coin picture now added to top post.

Just looking at the symmetry- could that have been a double ended spoon? I've seen a few very old examples before of double ended spoons... :dontknow:

I think your right, it would explain a lot.

Well done ,, is it possible the spoon was use in early pharmacy use ?

Nice big hammered and a spoon never seen before. :occasion14:

Dad & I discussed a type of medicine spoon, but now I'm pretty sure it was 2 ended. So I assume 1 bowl was larger than the other, so could be a pharmacy measuring type spoon??

That spoon was for the bad boys and girls..It was made so it was to long to get the food in their mouth:laughing7:

NICE FINDS CRU AND THE SPOON LOOKS TO BE MAYBE FOR MARROW OR SNUFF . WHATEVER ITS USED ON MUST BE DEEP ...
